I
have been searching the web for a great place to post book reviews
for librarians and teachers to use in the classroom. Well, I am
going to try hosting my own Book Talk Tuesday! I invite teachers
and librarians to link to a recent book talk or book review that
can be used by others- to help purchase new books, learn about new
books and to help give us book talk ideas.
My rules?
1. All content must be appropriate for children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
NEW 2. Please link to your original content, not the content of others.
3.
Websites that you link to must be child friendly since lots
of kids visit this site and if they click on your link, I
want it to be appropriate for them.
4. Positive reviews only, please... we only spread love here at The Lemme Library!
5. Books must be available in The US. (you are welcome to link to ARC reviews)
6. I reserve the right to remove any reviews that don't meet criteria 1-5.
In
the link title field, be sure to include the title of the
book you are reviewing and your site name. In the URL field,
please link to this specific post that contains the book
review (That way people don't have to scour your blog looking
for it!)

newcomers & visitors: Definition of "Book Talk" from Wikipedia:
"A booktalk in the broadest terms is what is spoken with the
intent to convince someone to read a book. The booktalker gives
the audience a glimpse of the setting, the characters, and/or the major conflict without providing the resolution or denouement. Booktalks make listeners care enough about the content of the book to want to read it. A
long booktalk is usually about five to seven minutes long and a
short booktalk is generally thirty seconds to two minutes long.
Do you like Halloween? What is your favorite childhood memory from Halloween or what do you do with your own kids? I just remember the plastic mask costumes I would wear.... so not fire retardant! The mask would fog up and I would get so hot! I remember getting oodles of candy! When I was a kid- you would get homemade treats! Caramel apples and popcorn balls! Mrs. Casklavka made the best popcorn balls and she only made them at Halloween. If someone gave my girls a homemade popcorn ball now, I would throw it away! Kids just don't know how great it was in the olden days!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory of Halloween ... oh, that's a hard one. Could mention that we always cook dinner in a pumpkin (it's this strange hamburger and rice casserole but it tastes YUMMY) and I liked to paint a face on the pumpkin because as it cooked it would melt all funny. Or it could be the ginormous pumpkin my farmer grandpa grew for us one year. Or the costumes my mom made (three youngest kids in the family got gipped .... she wasn't as fond of sewing by then as she was with the first three ;]). Oh, or the year we were upstairs watching ... I think it might have been a Halloween Growing Pains when we heard my mom scream! Sadly she had just been bitten by a scorpion so that's not cool. But she survived. Or more recently when my niece (who's name is Winnie) came by the house dressed up as ... you guessed it. The Pooh Bear.
ReplyDeleteI love Halloween! And I think I love it even more now that my kiddos are getting old enough to appreciate it. Makes it so much more fun! Though I do have to say that as a kid I still remember enjoying those popcorn balls...wow, the things we ingested back then. Haha
ReplyDeleteMy dad setting up a stereo system in our apartment building to make spooky noises. We lived at the top of the stairwell. You really wanted candy to come up to our apartment. Dad had a great sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteLove halloween too, but Christmas remains my favorite time of the year. My memories of Halloween are tied to my daughter's home-made costumes: one year we dressed her up as a street urchin (complete with black garbage bag for headgear and empty cans stitched on her black patchy shawl), another year we dressed her up as a dryad - we had fun putting twigs, branches, leaves around her tie-dyed green wraparound; another year we had her go as a purple-themed gypsy with huge dangling loopy earrings and bangles and feathered stuff. now that she's nine, it's becoming increasingly difficult for us to be as imaginative. hehehe.

ReplyDeleteI like Halloween a lot, too. My big dilemma these days is how do I take the kids trick or treating AND be at home to see all the cute kids who come to the door. I have really fond memories of my late teenage years--being the one at home giving out the candy and seeing all the precious faces waiting for a treat :)
I have a love/hate relationship with Halloween. I love the fun but I hate the costume preparations. My kids always seem to go a little nuts about choosing just the right outfit, needing all kinds of fancy makeups, and what-not. Still, once the day arrives and we're all ready to go, it's a total blast.

ReplyDeleteHalloween is my Christmas, too, but I've always felt guilty because of it! Glad to hear a kindred spirit. They are my favorite books to buy. Students love them too, and we are partial to Hallowweiner, Dav Pilkey,
ReplyDeleteHalloween has always been my favorite holiday. Love the crisp fall air, the pumpkins, the scary costumes. And they have to be scary! My daughter went through a princess/fairy phase but she eventually came back to goblins and ghouls. She's grown now so I have to make due with dressing up my pug. This year he he going to be a wizard.

ReplyDeleteRegarding Halloween: I don't usually do much in the way of decorations or costumes. A few years ago I hosted a pumpkin-carving party, but it was a bit crowded in my little NY apartment.
